Mr. Letizia was the first teacher I had that made me feel smart. In 8th grade at Sedgwick Middle School, he took a paper I had written on The Stamp Act, and suggested that with some revisions the paper might be one that we could enter into the State History Day Competition. I agreed, and Mr. Letizia worked with me after school each day for 2 weeks in the Sedgwick library fine tuning the paper, and driving me home when my mom was unavailable to pick me up. We submitted a paper that ultimately took 3rd place. It was my first real academic accomplishment. Mr. Letizia went to the award ceremony to watch me accept the trophy, which still resides on my desk and reminds me of the dedicated teacher he was. As my daughter is now on the cusp of entering middle school here in West Hartford, my one wish for her is that she finds a teacher that makes her feel as smart and valued as Mr. Letizia made me feel each day I entered his classroom.
