VIRGINIA LANGHORNE "BUDDY" ALEXANDER MESSENGER, was born August 14, 1924 in Lynchburg, VA and died July 9, 2015 in West Hartford, CT. She attended Randolph-Macon Woman's College (R-MWC) in Lynchburg, VA, double majoring in French and Spanish, and graduating Phi Beta Kappa, cum laude in 1945. During her years at R-MWC she also was active in the Junior League, and was a member of the "Am Sams" (secret sorority) and the "Pig Wigs" (social group). During her senior year she was elected to R-MWC's "May Court." (a beauty pageant). After graduating from R-MWC, she moved to NYC to attend Columbia University where she earned an Occupational Therapy degree in 1949. At Columbia in November of 1947, she met David Graham McConnell, whom she married in the Columbia campus chapel in August of 1948. The couple moved to Columbus, OH and had four children - sons Michael Ross McConnell, Paul Douglas McConnell, Murrell Alexander McConnell and daughter, Margaret Helen Kimja McConnell. In May of 1969, Buddy left Columbus, OH, divorcing Dave in April 1970. She moved to West Hartford, CT where she met and married Richard G. Messenger. Buddy and Richard divorced in 1977. She is survived by her daughter, Margaret Helen Kimja McConnell, two grandsons, Galen Alexander McConnell and Duncan Grahan McConnell and her younger brother James Kinnier Alexander. She was pre-deceased by her older brother Michael Alexander and her three sons. A Memorial Service will be Saturday, (August 1), 11:00 am at Bethany Lutheran Church, 1655 Boulevard, West Hartford. Burial will be in the Church's Memorial Garden. In lieu of flowers, please donate to any charity which assists children of the Cherokee Nation.
