Thomas Patrick Burns, 94 of Wethersfield, CT was called to heaven on Friday, March 21, 2014 at Hartford Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Hartford, CT on December 5, 1919 to Mary and James Burns. He met his childhood sweetheart, June Crosson and on October 31, 1942 they married. Tom is a veteran of the U.S. Army, World War II serving as a Sergeant of the European Theater, 3rd Army. Upon his return, he was employed as a tool and dye maker at Royal Typewriter for 33 years and after the company closed he worked 14 years at Stanadyne Co. Thomas was a life member and former Commander of Hannon Hatch VFW Post 9929.
The family he leaves behind: his sister Virginia Bouvier, two children Thomas P. Burns II, and his wife Susane, and Patti Burns. Five grandchildren, Kerry Smith and partner Rue Landau, Allyson Ruganis and husband Brian, David Smith, Emely Larson and husband Stephen, Sean Burns and wife Julie along with two son in-laws Thomas Smith and wife Nancy, and Roger Kalafut. Thomas has four great-grandchildren Brennen, Connor, and Mollie Ruganis and Eli Smith-Landau. Sean and Julie are expecting his fifth in August. He also leaves several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, June, and two daughters Gail Burns-Smith and Maureen Kalafut.
Thomas enjoyed spending time with all of his family, UCONN Basketball, and telling funny “corny” jokes. Poppi will be forever missed by his family and close friends, especially Marilyn, Sister Marie and Rosemary. For many years he was lovingly cared for by his daughter Patti, this allowed him to live in the comfort of his own home. A gift he truly wanted.
Calling hours are Wednesday, March 26, 2014, 4 PM – 7 PM at Sheehan-Hilborn-Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Avenue, West Hartford, CT 06110. On Thursday, March 27, 2014, at 10 AM, a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Corpus Christi Church, 601 Silas Deane Highway Wethersfield, CT 06109. Those wishing to attend please go directly to the church. Mr. Burns final resting place will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery directly following the mass.
