Obituary for Sr. Dolores A Crowley

Sr. Dolores A Crowley
Sister Dolores A. Crowley, (Daniel Mary) of the Sisters of Mercy died peacefully on May 11, 2016 at St. Mary Home, West Hartford. She was born in Providence, RI, on January 11, 1939 of the late Edmund S. and Gertrude M. (Meadows) Crowley. Sister Dolores entered the Sisters of Mercy on September 2, 1957 and professed her vows on June 26, 1960. After receiving her B.A. degree from Diocesan Teachers College, Madison, Sister taught in diocesan parochial schools for more than 11 years prior to becoming the Sisters of Mercy Director of Novices, a position she held for seven years. After receiving two Master’s degrees in Mathematics and Pastoral Counseling from St. Joseph College (now University of St. Joseph) Sister determined to dedicate herself to serving those in great need, the very poor, sometimes homeless. She became Director of St. Elizabeth House in Hartford developing administrative skills and a vision for transitional housing. After three years there, Dolores accepted a challenging assignment to become Executive Director of McAuley House in Providence, RI, which proved to be her most lasting, satisfying and life giving ministry. She exercised all of her talent as teacher and principal to develop and build her housing dream, McAuley Village in 1990, a 23 apartment complex for single parents with families who would be able to transition from homelessness through shelter, job training and support services to independence and family security. Her prominence in the housing ministry gained her numerous awards and citations. Two prestigious awards stand out: Jefferson Award presented to her in 1991 for greatest public service benefitting a local community and national recognition from U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development with its National Excellence Award for McAuley Village’s innovative approach to assisting poor parents, presented by Secretary Henry Cisneros in 1996. Although quiet by nature, Sister Dolores had a unique ability to listen with her heart and a smile that welcomed all. Even after retirement, she continued her ministry as a volunteer. Sister Dolores will be greatly missed. Edmund Crowley, brother to Sister Dolores predeceased her. Sister is survived by two sisters, Margaret Crowley, RSM of W. Palm Beach, FL and Trudy C. McCormack and her husband Dr. Thomas P. McCormack of Mattapoisett, MA.; a niece Maureen Chamberlain, two nephews, Patrick and Brendan McCormack, grandnephews, grandnieces, and her community of the Sisters of Mercy. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated on Thursday, May 26, at 6:00 p.m. St. Mary Home, 2021 Albany Avenue, West Hartford. To honor Sister’s request, there will be no calling hours. Burial will take place on Friday at 9:00 a.m. in St. Mary Cemetery. Those wishing to make a donation in Sister’s memory are asked to consider Sisters of Mercy, 55 E. Cedar St., Newington CT, 06111 or McAuley Ministries, 622 Elmwood Avenue, P.O. Box 73195, Providence, RI, 02907. Sheehan-Hilborn-Breen Funeral Home, West Hartford has care of the arrangements.
