SISTER JANE FRANCES McGURKIN (Sister Alice Mary) of the Sisters of Mercy died March 18, 2014. She was the the first of 5 children born to the late Francis and Catherine (Sheehan) McGurkin. Upon graduating from Mt. St. Joseph Academy, Sister entered the Sisters of Mercy in June of 1942 at the age of 18 and found herself in a classroom 3 months later! In time, she earned both Bachelor and Master degrees from St. Joseph College in West Hartford. 58 years of her life were dedicated to the ministry of education at every level, from grade 2 through college (Salve Regina in Newport, RI), and included the principalship at St. Peter School, Danbury, St. Joseph, Norwalk and St. Mary, Milford. Before retiring in 2000, Sister Jane directed a Daycare program at St, Francis, New Haven. A determined and practical pillar of strength, Sister Jane stood out for her kindness toward and interest in others. Never one to draw attention to herself, this peaceful woman was friend to all, genuine, encouraging and affirming, always leaving them with a joyful smile and her cheery “Go easy”. Sister enjoyed a good time, especially when it came to sports and her favorite Duke University team! Sister Jane is predeceased by 2 brothers, Gerald McGurkin and Francis “Skip” McGurkin. She is survived by her brother Robert McGurkin and his wife Dolores of Winston-Salem, NC; her sister Ann Carole Moylan of Durham, NC; 2 sisters-in-law, Eleanor McGurkin of Philadelphia, PA and Sally McGurkin of Bolton, CT; many nieces and nephews, and her sisters in the Mercy community. At Sister Jane’s request, all services will be private. Those wishing to make a donation in Sister’s memory are asked to consider the Sisters of Mercy, c/o 55 East Cedar St., Newington, CT 06111. Sheehan-Hilborn-Breen Funeral Home, West Hartford has care of arrangements.
