Obituary for Ruth A. Hummell (Lohrey)

Ruth A. Hummell (Lohrey)
Ruth A. Hummell 90, died peacefully with her daughter and granddaughter by her side on April 15th, 2015 knowing she had loved and was loved by many who could not be there with her. After waiting 27 years, she has joined her beloved husband, John in heaven. Born in Brooklyn, NY and raised in Glendale, NY she was the youngest daughter of Yvonne and Conrad Lohrey. At the end of World War II, she married John Hummell, a returning naval officer. Together they moved to Long Island where they raised four children, Dr. Monica Cipes Arnold of West Hartford, CT, Bruce Hummell of Rocky Point, NY, Richard Hummell of Mastic, NY and Christopher Hummell of Ridgeville, SC. She was especially fond of her son-in-law Malcolm Arnold, who could always make her laugh and her daughter-in-law, Faye Hummell, who she loved like a daughter and considered a dear friend. Her five grandchildren, Troy Jeffcoat, Benjamin Cipes, Dr. Elizabeth Cipes Chisholm, Nick Hummell and Laura Arnold were the loves of her life. She was fortunate to have six great grandchildren, Blake and Parker Jeffcoat, Drayton Hummell, Jackson and James Cipes and Katie Chisholm. She will be greatly missed by her dear friend of over 70 years, Vita Mauriello of San Francisco, CA. Educated and well read, Ruth was a repository of knowledge- whenever we needed to know something we'd ask Mom and she usually knew the answer. She often admitted she wasn't much of a cook, her favorite cookbook was the I Hate to Cookbook! She continued to make new friends until her last day on earth and to know her was to love her. All who knew her were invited to 101 Sheffield and all she met were her favorite! Ruth received her RN from St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing in 1945. She worked at Wycoff Heights Hospital in Brooklyn NY and later as nurse supervisor at Huntington Hospital in Huntington, NY. Nursing was the perfect profession for such a gentle, kind and compassionate person. She was a confidant and mentor to the LPN's and CNA's who worked with her. As promised in the bible, "Cast your bread upon the waters for you will find it after many days"...so her goodness was rewarded. As she fell ill in her later years she was lovingly cared for by the nurses and CNA's at Touchpoints of Farmington and at Hebrew Healthcare. Her family, in gratitude to nurses, CNAs and all those who care for the elderly, have established a Nursing Scholarship in Ruth's name at the University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford, CT. Calling hours will be on Sunday, April 19, 2015, from 3-6 pm at Sheehan-Hilborn-Breen Funeral Home at 1084 New Britain Avenue, West Hartford, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 872 Farmington Ave, West Hartford, CT 06119, will be celebrated on Monday, April 20, 2015 at 10:00 am. Graveside services will be Tuesday, April 21, at 1:00pm in Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, LI. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Ruth A. Hummell, RN Nursing Scholarship at University of Saint Joseph, 1678 Asylum Avenue, West Hartford, CT 06119. Online condolences may be made at www.SheehanHilbornBreen.com.
