Robert Francis Moylan, 83, of West Hartford, CT passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at Hebrew Home in West Hartford surrounded by his loving wife Carol and their children. He was born on January, 13, 1931 in Hartford, CT, the son of the late Honorable Cornelius A. Moylan and Anne (Durkin) Moylan. Bob attended Williston Academy in Massachusetts and was a graduate of Bulkeley High School in Hartford. He enlisted in the United States Air Force beginning July 1951 and is a Korean War veteran having proudly served as an ammunition foreman at multiple forward Air Force bases in Korea. After being honorably discharged in July 1955, he returned home to Hartford where he continued his public service joining the West Hartford Police Department in 1955.
Throughout Bob’s career with the WHPD he served with distinction in the Patrol, Traffic and ultimately was promoted to Detective working in the Detective Division and finally the Special Investigation Division. Bob worked in fingerprinting identification, including crime scene photography and development. Bob had uncanny skills including a near photographic memory for names, faces, and license plates putting these abilities to use not only on his own cases, but was often called in to assist other units and departments in Hartford County on their cases as well. Bob received numerous letters of recognition and commendation during his service.
Bob was a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees and New York Giants. He was an avid Hartford Whalers fan having been a season ticket holder since the team’s inception as the New England Whalers in the WHA. Bob was a proud member of the Korean War Veterans Association, Chapter 1; the National Korean War Association; American Legion Hayes-Velhage Post 96 in West Hartford; Hannon-Hatch Veterans of Foreign Wars in West Hartford; and the Retired West Hartford Police Association. In his retirement, Bob was instrumental in raising funds for the purchase of bullet-proof vests for all West Hartford Police Officers, before funding was made available in the Department budget. Through his extensive work along with good friend Barbara Gordon, a strong supporter of the Police Department, in their “Invest in Your Police Department” campaign the effort was a great success and raised awareness on the subject for other local police departments. Bob was also a member of the Hartford Police Emerald Society combining his brotherhood of law enforcement officers and his proud Irish heritage.
Bob’s greatest love was spending time with his children and especially his grandchildren, who he absolutely adored, whether being vacations at Old Lyme Shores Beach, in Old Lyme, or their various sporting or other events, or just spending a holiday or weekend day together. His grandchildren often fondly speak of “Grampa’s sneaky smile” after a good natured wise-crack or having them sneak him a second slice of pie while “Grammy” wasn’t looking. To Bob, there was nothing better than being surrounded by his entire family with good food and fun during family gatherings.
He is also survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Carol (Neumeister) Moylan, son Robert Erich “Rick” Moylan of Wolcott, and grandchildren Erich Matthew Moylan and Kimberly Elizabeth Moylan; daughter Kathleen Ann (Moylan) Cargos, son-in-law Harry S. Cargos, of Vernon, and grandchildren Alexander Michael Cargos and Christopher John Cargos; son Daniel Patrick Moylan, of Hebron, and grandchildren Connor John Moylan, Brendan Cameron Moylan and Sinead Careen Moylan; daughter Kara Marie (Moylan) Carucci, son-in-law Robert Kyle Carucci of Windsor and grandchildren Kyle William Carucci, Jamie Marisa Carucci and Bret Robert “the little guy” Carucci. Bob is also survived by two former daughter’s in-law Carmela Grace (DelSanto) Moylan and Fiona (Cameron) Moylan with whom he had great fondness and affection. In addition, Bob is survived by Rick’s companion, Kathy Calo and her daughter Rachele. Bob is survived by his brothers Gerald E Moylan and wife Martha of Washington DC; Cornelius A Moylan of West Hartford; Muriel (Moylan) Nevens of Delmar, NY; Richard D Moylan and wife Martha of Georgetown, MA and several nieces and nephews he loved so much.
Calling hours are Sunday from 4pm-7pm at Sheehan, Hilborn , Breen Funeral Home on 1084 New Britain Avenue, West Hartford. A mass of Christian burial will be at Saint Mark the Evangelist Church, 467 South Quaker Lane, West Hartford on Monday 10 am. Everyone is asked to go directly to church. Burial with military honors will be in Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the donor’s choice.
