Michael Anthony  Ciganik
Michael Anthony Ciganik, 92, of West Hartford passed away Tuesday, June 12, 2012. Michael was a resident of West Hartford for the past 60 years. He was a communicant of Saint Brigid Church and a member of the Holy Name Society. An Aerial Engineer and Gunner with the 12th Air Force during World War II, Michael was a Staff Sergeant and member of a crew of a B-26, flying 47 missions over North Africa, Italy, and the islands of the Mediterranean. For his service, he was awarded the European/African/Middle-Eastern Campaign Medal (EAME) with one Bronze Battle Star, a Distinguished Unit Badge, Good Conduct Medal, and an Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters. In September 2009, Michael received a Public Service Award from the Secretary of the State of Connecticut as a veteran of World War II. For almost 40 years, he worked as a Lead Man Machinist at Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford. Michael was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, a man who could fix or build anything from scratch. After his retirement, he devoted himself to enjoying family celebrations and taking care of his loved ones and fellow citizens of “Pop World.” Michael is survived by his three daughters and two sons-in-law, Andrea and James Hart of South Glastonbury; Maryann and Jack Vestali of Niantic; and Nancy Lussier of Old Lyme; a sister-in-law, Jean Guze of Newington; five grandchildren; and several nieces and a nephew. Michael was predeceased by his wife, Mary, of 65 years; three brothers and a sister; and a son-in-law, Norman Lussier. Funeral procession will be Friday, 11:30 am from the Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Ave., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 12:00 pm in St. Brigid Church, West Hartford. Burial with military honors will be in Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford. Visitation will be prior to the funeral procession from 10:30 to 11:30 am at the funeral home. Donations in Michael’s name may be made to charitable organizations of the contributor’s choice.
