Obituary for Mary Dalal Basil

Mary Dalal Basil, age 95, entered eternal rest on December 18, 2014 in West Hartford, Connecticut. Born in Island Pond, Vermont to Sadie and Joseph Basil, she was raised in Lebanon, where she was educated in the French and Arabic languages, in addition to English. She was renowned for her acute memory, her selfless deeds, her pure heart, and her guiltless life. As a teen, Mary returned to Vermont with her mother and three siblings. She worked at Quimby’s Resort, where she quickly became a favorite of Hortense Quimby and a keyholder. During WWII, she moved to Hartford to assist in the war effort, making M1 Carbines at the Underwood Typewriter Company. Post-war, she continued to work at Underwood, later moving to Royal Typewriter, and then to Robby Len, Inc., and Capital Swimwear Co., where she created swimwear until her retirement. Mary never wed, but she was a loyal and devoted daughter, sister and aunt. She valued independence, and lived on her own through age 95. A devout Catholic, with a special devotion to her namesake, St. Mary, she loved to sew, knit, crochet, embroider, and bake, all of which she did skillfully. She leaves behind her sister, Frances Davis of Agawam, MA, her sister-in-law, Elizabeth Gustin Basil, of West Hartford (to whom she wished special thanks), and many loving nieces and nephews and their families. Funeral procession will be Monday, (Dec. 22) 9:30 am from Sheehan-Hilborn-Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Ave., West Hartford, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 10:00 am at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, West Hartford. Burial will be in Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. Calling hour will be prior to the funeral procession from 8:30 - 9:30 am at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Foundation for the Advancement of Catholic Schools, 467 Bloomfield Avenue, Bloomfield, CT 06002.
