Maria Arruda Lopes, 83, of West Hartford, beloved wife of Jose Lopes, peacefully passed away, surrounded by her family on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at home. Born in Porto Formoso, Sao Miguel Island, Azores, daughter of the late Antonio Arruda and Maria Conceicao Placid, she came to the United States in the late 1960's. Maria was employed for 24 years at Park Place Health Care Center, Hartford, formerly the Greenwood Convalescent Home. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family and friends. Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, Antonio Luis Lopes of Shelton; a daughter, Betty Arruda of West Hartford and her boyfriend, Jason Edward Parauka; a granddaughter, Victoria Maria Lopes; a sister, Blondina Teixeira and husband, Jose Teixeira, a brother, Joe Arruda and wife Kathleen Arruda, a brother, Liberal Arruda and wife Leonilde Arruda, a brother, Carlos Arruda and wife Rosa Arruda, a sister, Fatima Arruda and husband David Arruda all of Fall River, MA. Maria is also survived my many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Manuel Arruda. Calling hours will be Tuesday, (January 24), from 5 to 8 pm at the Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Ave., West Hartford. There will be a prayer service at 6:00 pm.
