My Memories of Jack

I was so dismayed when I heard about Jack’s passing. He was such a character, I didn’t think he could pass on. As a child, you meet so many adults, teachers, coaches, relatives, neighbors and family friends but only a few will say or do something that you will never forget. With Jack, there was so many memories that have made a lasting impression on my life: 1. The stories he would tell that made my dad laugh just enthralled me as a child. 2. The games he would invent, the constant competition, always the gracious loser and never the miserable winner. 3. The way he liked to be the underdog. I remember as a young boy while our families were on a camping vacation, he made me his partner against my dad and grandfather in a game of setback. I had never played before, but he insisted that I be his partner. I am sure there was money on the game and there was no way he could win, but he loved that challenge and he never got mad or agitated that I didn’t know what the heck I was doing. 4. The first time I played golf with him and my dad, the simple awe of how far he could hit a golf ball. 5. The way everything was fun to him, he was bigger than life and yet he was this little kid. He was always looking for something fun to do, jarts, basketball, chipping golf balls, cards or whatever game he could invent. 6. But most important, when I was a child, he never treated me as one. I was always an adult in the way he spoke to me and in the games, the competitions and the story telling, he made me feel like an equal. As a child, as all children do, I wanted to be an adult and he was the first adult to treat me as one. Before, I heard of his passing, I could never hear Jack’s name and not smile and now when I hear his name, I know I will always be a little sad.
