Obituary for Helena Powers (Doherty)

Helena (Doherty) Powers, age 95, died on Saturday, March 22nd at St. Mary’s Home, West Hartford. She was born on August 15, 1918, in Miltown Malbay, County Clare, Ireland. She came to America in 1927 and was adopted by her aunt and uncle, Nellie and Thomas Gallagher. She graduated from Mount St. Joseph Academy in 1938 and began working at Aetna Insurance Company for the next several years. In 1945, Helena and Frank Powers were married and they resided in Elmwood for many years.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Anne Powers, her sister, Sister Ellen Mary Doherty, several cousins and friends, and extended family in Ireland. Helena was predeceased by her husband, Frank, her sisters, Sister Catherine Mary, Sister Mary James, Kathleen and her brother, John.
Helena was such a fun, spirited woman who made us feel special and loved when in her presence. She had a wonderful sense of humor and her stories and comments were always entertaining and often quite imaginative. Her difficulties or health problems were never her focus and a visit with Helena always left us feeling happier; our spirits lifted.
At Helena’s request, there will be no calling hours. Mass will be celebrated in St. Brigid Church in Elmwood on Friday, March 28th at 10:00 a.m. Prior to Mass, family and friends are invited to gather at the Sheehan-Hilborn-Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Avenue, West Hartford from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Burial will follow the Mass in Rose Hill Memorial Park, Rocky Hill.
Very special thanks are due to the Sisters of St. Joseph for their many years of loving care.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph, 27 Park Road, West Hartford, CT 06119.
