Gilberte "Gerry" (Tardif) Gingras, 89, of West Hartford died Wednesday, July 16, 2014. She was born in St. Agatha, ME, daughter of the late Emile and Mary Gagnon Tardif and was a graduate of Madawaska High School and had resided in West Hartford most of her life. She worked at Colts during wartime, as a supervisor in the tool room. Later she worked at Underwood making bomb fusses for airplanes. When Underwood closed she put herself through hairdressing school while raising four sons. She worked and managed a Salon in West Hartford for many years and when she retired from that she continued hairdressing by traveling to her clients homes and later in her own home. She loved to travel in her younger years every summer, cruising to Bermuda, bus trips to Nashville, flights to Vegas and Hawaii. She loved to bake cookies, grow tomatoes, strawberries, blueberries and raspberries and tend to her roses. Gerry loved to have lunch and play bingo at the Elmwood Senior Center. She crocheted baby sweater sets and blankets for all her grand and great grandchildren. Also, for the preemie babies at UConn and scarves for everyone she met. You never left her house empty handed. She is survived by her four sons and daughters-in-law; Bob and Beth of Bristol, Ronald and Irene of Newington, Mike and Marge of Granby, Dan and Lynn of Burlington. She also leaves ten grandchildren Rob, Chris, Kristine, Kara, Matt, Kelly, Kate, Mike, Brendan and Daniel and four great-grandchildren, Victoria, Alyssa, Ryan and Evan; a sister Martha Perkins of Enfield and brother Lloyd Tardif of Madawaska, Maine along with numerous nieces and nephews. Gerry also asked to mention her good friend of more than 50 years Francis Vigue, she loved you like a sister. She also leaves her constant companion for over 18 years her cat "Mitten" whom she loved to rock and pet and share shrimp with. Gerry was predeceased by her sisters, Loretta Tardif, Marie Tardif and Eva Cerra and her friend, fellow hairdresser and travel companion Marilyn Knapp. Funeral Procession will be on Monday, July 21, at 9:15am from The Sheehan-Hilborn-Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Ave., West Hartford; with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am at St. Brigid Church, West Hartford. Burial will follow in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, from 5-8pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the Elmwood Senior Center, 1106 New Britain Ave., West Hartford, CT 06110.
