Obituary for Frederick N. "Fred" Byrnes

Frederick Nagel "Fred" Byrnes of Newington, formerly of West Hartford, passed from this life to be with the Lord and his beloved wife Ann on June 30, 2015. Born December 31, 1920 to the late Thomas and Dorothy (Nagel) Byrnes, he was raised in Rockville and graduated from Rockville High in 1939. Fred worked for the National Fire Insurance Company where he met his future wife. He was a proud veteran of World War II serving as a medic in the Army. He landed on Omaha Beach on D Day and served in France, the Ardennes
Forrest in Belgium and the Rhineland in Germany. Returning home he married Ann and lived in Hartford. He went to work as an underwriter for Aetna and retired after many years of service. Fred and Ann moved to West Hartford in 1956 and he resided there until moving to Newington in 2013. He enjoyed spending time with his family, days at the beach and playing cards with friends and family. Fred enjoyed golf after his retirement and was a big fan of Notre Dame football and UConn women's basketball. He was a friendly, caring man who was liked by everyone he met. He was predeceased by his wife Ann in 1999; also by siblings and their spouses, his three brothers, John, Robert, Francis (his twin); four sisters , Mary, Dorothy, Norma, and Margaret with whom he enjoyed taking long rides; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Dominick and Theresa Nardi; four brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law and their spouses, Angelo, Joseph, Dominick, Nicholas, Carmela and Vita, and his wife's Uncle Gerardo. Fred is survived by his two sons, John and his wife Marie, Kevin and his wife Debra; two adored grandchildren, Marc and his wife Sarah, Stephanie
Bauder and her husband Ryan; many dear friends, nieces and nephews. A special thanks to the entire staff at Cedar Mountain Commons and to Carol Hunter, who provided compassionate care in Fred's final months. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday,(July 3) , 10:00 am at St. Mark the Evangelist Church, 467 South Quaker Lane, West Hartford. All are requested to meet at the church. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford. Calling hours are TODAY from 5-8 pm at the Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Ave., West Hartford.
