Obituary for Elizabeth Gilpin (Pressey)

Elizabeth Gilpin (Pressey)
Elizabeth “Betty” Gilpin of Wethersfield passed away Friday, February 14, 2014 at the age of 96. Betty was born in Hartford, the daughter of Mark and Daisy Pressey. She graduated from Bulkeley High School and then Boston City Hospital as a Registered Nurse. She often shared stories of her time as an operating room nurse at Hartford Hospital and Newington Children’s Hospital before leaving the field to raise her family. Betty was a woman of many talents, including knitting, crocheting, cross-stitch, composing poems, and adding sharp-witted comments to any conversation. Her sense of humor and her care for others were present throughout her life, in her nursing career, her care for her family, and her love for animals. Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Robert Gilpin, her brother Julian Pressey, and her sister Alosia Wheeler. She is survived by her three children Cynthia (Richard) Winters of Meriden, NH and Oakton, VA, Wayne (Debra) Gilpin of Waterford, and Barbara Hesse of Wethersfield; five grandchildren, Trevor, Amanda, Veronica, Sarah, and Tracy; and one great-grandchild, Genevieve. A memorial service will be held to remember and celebrate Betty’s life at Elmwood Community Church, 26 Newington Rd., West Hartford, on Monday (Feb. 17) at 1:00 pm. Donations to Elmwood Community Church Accessibility Fund or the Connecticut Humane Society, 701 Russell Rd., Newington, CT 06110, may be made to reflect Betty’s contribution to her church and her love for animals. In honor of Betty’s zest for life, please feel free to wear a bright color to the service. “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened” (Dr Seuss).
