Obituary for Donato Dos Santos Lopes
Donato Dos Santos Lopes of West Hartford, 94, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at Hartford Hospital.
Born November 4,1922 in Serra de Santo Antonio, Portugal, the son of Manuel Jorge Lopes and Beatriz dos Santos Ferreira. He is predeceased by his first wife Soledad Terrao Lopes, two brothers and sister. He leaves his wife of 43 years, Maria Rosa Lopes; his daughter, Maria Isabel Paulo and her husband Herminio; his son, Nelson Lopes and his wife Silvia. He is also survived by his grandchildren; Christine Huapaya and her husband Luis, Sara Arrendondo and her husband Jorge, Michael and Kevin Lopes and his great grandchildren Nicholas, Isabella and Ava; and a very large extended family, which includes many cherished nieces and nephews and beloved friends in the Portuguese community.
In his early years, he began working in Lisbon, Portugal for the Carris de Ferro de Lisboa (Lisbon tramway network) loading coal into the boilers powering the lines. Over a period of 28 years, he worked his way up to driver and finally as a respected instructor for the company. Arriving in the United States in 1972, he settled in Hartford CT and later residing in West Hartford, CT. He worked for Sims Metal Management as a production line worker for 15 years.
Donato will be remembered as a loving, sweet and humble man. As a long-time member of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Hartford, his Catholic faith and Portuguese community were very important to him. With a smile on his face and an anecdote to share, he had such a passion for life. He loved his long walks, reading, crossword puzzles, playing dominoes, and making homemade wine.
The funeral procession will be Monday, 9:00am from Sheehan-Hilborn-Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Ave., West Hartford followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Hartford. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford. Calling hours will be Sunday, from 2:00pm - 5:00pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Donato Lopes to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Online condolences may be made at www.SheehanHilbornBreen.com.
