Deolinda (De Costa Melo) Mendonca, 89, of Hartford, devoted loving wife of 19 years of the late Jose DeMelo Mendonca, peacefully journeyed Home to be with Our Lord on Thursday, April 3, 2014 with her beloved family by her side. Born in Sao Miguel Azores, Portugal on July 25, 1924, a daughter of the late Joao and Maria Anacleto, after the passing of her husband, she came to America in 1967 with her eight children and sacrificed all she had for her family. She was a strong woman and role model, as she became a U.S. citizen at the age of 70. A devout Catholic, Deolinda was a faithful communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Hartford who prayed the rosary daily. She also liked to bake, host family dinners, and had a strong passion for gardening. Along with her beloved husband and parents she was predeceased by 5 infant children. Deolinda is survived by her eight children, Maria Fatima Marques and her husband Laudalino of West Hartford, Maria Mendonca and her husband Manuel of Newington, Carlos DeMelo and his wife Maria of Windsor, Irene Mendonca and her husband Manuel Janeiro of Hartford, Maria Luz Marques and her husband Joaquim of South Windsor, Jose Melo and his wife Margarete of Vernon, John DeMelo Mendonca of Florida, and Leonor Rainha and her husband Joe of East Hartford. She is also survived by twenty-six adored grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. Funeral procession will be Monday, April 7, 9:00 am from the Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Avenue, West Hartford, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 50 Kane Street, Hartford. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery, 453 Fairfield Avenue, Hartford. Relatives and friends may call on Sunday, April 6, from 2 – 5 pm at the funeral home.
