Denis McCarthy, 79 of Farmington, beloved husband of 55 years to Mary (Jones) McCarthy passed away peacefully on Friday, January 16, 2015 at Hartford Hospital surrounded by his family. Denis was born in Dunmanus, County Cork, Ireland on February 19, 1935, son of the late John and Hannah McCarthy. He emigrated to the United States in 1958 and settled into the Hartford area in 1960, living in Farmington for the past 33 years. Denis was a self employed landscaper in West Hartford for many years. He was an active member of the Irish American Home Society in Glastonbury and a communicant of St. Helena’s Church in West Hartford.
Denis is survived by his wife Mary, his children Ann McCarthy of Morristown, New Jersey, Patrick and his wife Erin of Simsbury, Eileen McCarthy of New Britain, Grandsons William, Sean, and Denis McCarthy of Simsbury, and his brother Patrick and sister Francie O’Mahony both of Co. Cork, Ireland. He was predeceased by his sister Mary O’Donohue. Denis’s final act was the gift of tissue donation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, (January 21) at 10:00 am at the Church of St. Helena, Echo Lane, West Hartford. Everyone is requested to meet at Church. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford. Calling hours are Tuesday (January 20) from 5-8 pm at the Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Ave., West Hartford. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Denis’s name may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association, http://www.alz.org/.
