Obituary for David W. Miller

David was a veteran of the US Army. He was drafted and served in Germany during WW II as a Rifleman and Sharpshooter. After his service in the Army he worked his way through college (a job with the US Postal Service), earning an undergraduate degree from UCLA and went on to get a graduate teaching degree from USC. Upon seeing an intriguing recruitment notice for the Federal Bureau of Investigation on the bulletin board, he applied and joined the FBI in 1952 as a Special Agent. After training in Quantico, VA he was initially based in Newark, NJ where he met and married Dolores McEnaney. David and Dolores ultimately settled in the Hartford, CT area where they raised their children (Steven, Bruce, Pamela and Janice). David was an active member of the community, including serving as Scoutmaster, PTA president and was involved in numerous other organizations. The family would make frequent trips back to the McEnaney hometowns in the Midwest (Iowa/Missouri) for memorable vacations.
After Dolores’ death in 1974, David met and married Martha Niven Stevens. They continued to live in the Hartford area and successfully integrated the two families. David developed deep relationships with Martha‘s children (Jacqueline and Scott Stevens) as well as with Martha‘s cousin, David Watts, and they continued to be in contact regularly. David retired from the Bureau in 1980, after rising to the level of Special Agent in Charge of the Hartford FBI office. After retirement he took up the game of golf and became an avid golfer and David and Martha spent time in CT and FL.
After the death of Martha in 1998, David met and married Anne Urquhart and moved to Lake of the Woods in Locust Grove, VA. Once again, David became intimately involved with another family and was able to develop special relationships with Anne’s children (John, Laura, Ted, Julie and Andrea). David and Anne spent time in VA and FL until they moved permanently to Venice, FL in 2002. He was a member of the Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
David is survived by his wife, Anne Urquhart Miller of Venice, FL, and his children: Steve Miller (Marcie McCaffrey) of Wethersfield, CT; Bruce Miller (Mary Ann) of Shallotte, NC; Pamela Pelletier (Rodrique) of Willington, CT; and Janice Miller (Ken Skripkar) of Tucson, AZ.
David had 7 grandchildren: Joshua Miller (Elizabeth) of Woodbury, MN; Andrew Miller (Andrea Faessler) of St. Paul, MN; Marissa Miller (David Waters) of New Britain, CT; Zachary Pelletier (Crystal Howard) of Stafford Springs, CT; Allison Commins (Matt) of Olympia, WA; and Amanda and Ryan Brandon of Tucson, AZ. He had 3 great grandchildren: Jackson and Gabrielle Miller of Woodbury, MN and Rory Commins of Olympia, WA.
David had 7 stepchildren: John Urquhart of Melbourne, FL; Laura White of Nokomis, FL; Ted Urquhart (Peg) of Wilmington, NC; Julie Kuzo (John) of Holly Springs, NC; Andrea Oswald of Cary, NC; Jacqueline Stevens (Gail Dosik) of New York, NY and Scott Stevens (Gail) of East Hampton, CT. All of us will miss David greatly and feel fortunate to have been part of David’s life and family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to TideWell Hospice, 5955 Rand Boulevard, Sarasota, FL 34238 (Attention Philanthropy Department).
