Bette Joanne (Nelson) Scavo, 83, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 surrounded by her loving children. She was born in Carnegie, PA. daughter of the late Edgar R. and Mary E. (Kelly) Nelson. She was a resident of Elmwood and was a graduate of Hall High School. She was a current resident of Newington. Prior to her retirement, she had worked for the State of Connecticut in the Department of Administrative Services. Bette loved visiting the Maine coast, caring for her grand dog Glinda and feeding her birds and squirrels. Most of all her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Bette is survived by her beloved children, Karen Toohey of Newington and Stephen Scavo and his wife Sherri of North Branford; three grandchildren, Shannon Toohey, Samantha and Matthew Scavo; a brother, Peter Nelson of Farmington and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Bette is predeceased by a son-in-law, Thomas Toohey and a sister-in-law, Lois Nelson. The family would like thank the wonderful hospice staff at Hartford Hospital. Calling hours will be Friday, January 6, from 5-7 pm at the Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Ave. West Hartford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 7, 10:00 am, at Saint Brigid Church, West Hartford. Everyone is requested to meet at the church. Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Park, Rocky Hill. Memorial contributions may be made to the Helen and Harry Gray Cancer Center, 85 Retreat Ave., Hartford, CT 06106.
