Ann Roach  Keating
Ann Roach Keating, 80, of West Hartford, CT, passed away in her home on Wednesday, August 19, 2015.Ann was a resident of West Hartford, CT for 51 years. She was born to the late Dorothy Mitchell Freeman Roach and Bernard J. Roach in Kingston, NY, on February 3, 1935. She was the sister of Bernard J. Roach, Jr. (deceased) and Maureen Roach Bradley of Kingston, NY. Ann graduated from The Academy of Mount St. Ursula, Kingston, NY, and the College of Mount Saint Vincent, Riverdale, NY. She also procured a Masters Degree of Education from Central Connecticut State College while raising 3 children and working full-time. She was a life-long educator of English, having taught in Kingston, NY, Palo Alto, CA, Hartford, CT, and Bristol, CT. She was a hard–working, hard-driving, creative, caring and fun middle school and high school English teacher. At times, she would teach class dressed-up as the main character of the novel she was teaching at the moment. One of her favorite protagonists to “play” was Hester Prynne from The Scarlet Letter. In her later years (until age 75!), Ann taught English and creative writing at Tunxis Community College, where she gave her time and her heart to her students. In addition to teaching, Ann loved her grandchildren, to read, to write (she just finished writing a book for children), to act, to direct, to tell stories, to cook, to sew Halloween costumes, Mark Twain and his house, to dance, to laugh, to walk the beach, to go to parties, her best friend and sister Maureen, her sisters-in-law, Joan Keating and Anne K. Wehner, her wonderful friends, and any and all cats, especially Siamese ones. She is survived by her children, Kathleen A. Keating (Bristol, RI), Patrick S. Keating (Nantucket, MA), Kerry M. Keating (Rome, Italy), a son-in-law John S. Oliver and former daughter-in-law Ashelee Frederickson, 5 grandchildren – Quinn, Forbes, Knox, Niamh and Benny, many nieces and nephews, and her devoted friends, especially Mary Gavin Hull. She was predeceased by her former husband, Stephen J. Keating, Jr., and her dear, dear friend Deanne Phillips. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, (August 24), at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter Claver Church, 47 Pleasant Street, West Hartford, CT. Burial will be private.
