Obituary for William "Bill/Denny/Sarge" Cronin

William “Bill/Denny/Sarge” Dennis Cronin, of Newington, devoted husband of Patrica (Teresino) for over 66 years, passed away on December 13, 2023 at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, surrounded by his loving family. Born on December 16, 1930, son of the late Dennis and Cetra (George) Cronin in Columbus, Ohio, he was one of eight children. After his parents’ early passing, he was brought to CT where he was raised by his relatives, Dennis and Helen O’Connell.

Denny was a 1950 graduate of Weaver High School in Hartford and was a talented player for its baseball team. Soon after graduation, he enlisted (1950-1954) in the U.S. Marine Corps, which consisted of a tour of duty in the Korean Conflict and then served as a reservist until 1971. After military service, Denny was employed at Hamilton Standard and subsequently at Dunham-Bush as a machinist until retirement.

Denny was a long-time member of Saint Mary Church in Newington, Knights of Columbus, VFW, American Legion and Marine Corps Association. He volunteered as a Newington youth baseball coach for numerous years.

Retirement years were focused on spending time with grandchildren, traveling with Patricia to Ireland, and flying to Korea with his brother Tim for an anniversary of the Korean War Armistice. Denny enjoyed many years of gatherings and social events within the closeknit neighborhood the family called home for over 60 years.

Denny was predeceased by his sisters, Geraldine, Carolyn, Martha and Judy and his brothers, Joe, Jerry and Herbert “Tim”. He leaves behind his wife, Patricia and his three children: Dennis Cronin and partner, Margaret McCarthy of Lebanon, CT; Brenda (Cronin) Doyle and husband, Doug Haynes of Wolcott, CT; and Tim Cronin and wife, Mary Beth (Lucas) of Newington, CT; as well as his grandchildren, Kelsey, Katie, Alex and Rhian; his brother-in-law, Lewis Nedell and wife Rhonda of Rocky Hill, CT; and numerous nieces and nephews residing in Rhode Island, Ohio, Hawaii, California, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.

The family gives a heartfelt thanks to the community and staff at Avery Heights, our parents’ home for the past year where they have been shown the utmost care and compassion.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made on Denny’s behalf to: CHI/Avery Heights, 550 Avery Heights, Hartford, CT 06106-4271.
