Obituary for Thomas R. "Tom" Akers
Thomas “Tom” Russell Akers, 72, of Hartford, CT, passed away early Friday morning, January 11, 2019, after a very long battle of kidney disease.
Born in Knoxville, TN, to Anna (Hyland) and Paul Akers, Tom grew up in Hartford where he enjoyed baseball, and attended both Immaculate Conception School, and Holy Trinity High School. It was at both school and on the baseball field that Tom made some of his closest, life-long friends. His love of baseball and friendship eventually lead him to playing softball for various local teams, and earning him the nickname “Tricky Tom” and “Doc”. Tom was an exceptional guitar player, and understandably, he was quite proud of his finger picking skills. He had a fantastic sense of humor; quite the bibliophile, he had an extensive collection of books and movies, and vast interest and knowledge in a variety of topics, ranging from sports, history, science fiction and astronomy, to name a few. He chose the best greeting cards for any and all occasions, which he loved to send to his family and friends.
Most important to Tom was his family. Tom was a good guy and he loved his family beyond words. He is survived by his two children, his son, Steven Akers of West Hartford; and his daughter, Wendi Vance, and her husband, Rich, of West Hartford; and his three grandchildren, his greatest treasures, Annalisa, Arik, and Aaron Vance of West Hartford. He just absolutely loved being Papa. He also leaves his brother, Paul Akers, and his wife, Colette, of Hebron, along with his niece, Shelby, and his nephew, Brendan. Tom also leaves his close friend and former wife, Annette Akers, as well as so many others. Tom is greatly missed. He was truly one of a kind. Please consider being an organ donor.
