Obituary for Sr. Kathryn Margaret Wrinn

Sister Kathryn Wrinn, (Edward Marie), of the Sisters of Mercy, died peacefully at her home at CREA House in Hartford on August 9, 2018. Born April 28th, 1932, and raised in Meriden, the youngest daughter of the late Edward and Marie Wrinn, Sister Kathryn entered the Sisters of Mercy on September 8, 1953 and professed her vows on June 28, 1956.She received a B.A. degree in Sociology from University of Connecticut and earned an M.A. degree in Sociology with community concentration, at Catholic University of America. She taught earnestly and successfully for 25 years in elementary and secondary diocesan Catholic schools throughout Connecticut prior to nearly a decade as a Maryknoll Sisters Associate in Tanzania. Kathryn’s time in Tanzania was truly a life changing experience for her as she saw and experienced the results of policies and programs around the world. Her ability to think systemically, combined with her personal experiences on the ground in Africa, provided an understanding, energy and vision for her work for systemic change when she returned to the US. Based on that life-changing experience, Sister Kathryn returned convinced of her role to advocate for economic, social and environmental change based on policies, programs and practices locally and globally. Counseled by her deep spirituality and a loving, compassionate heart, she dedicated her gentle and stubborn strength to become a formidable force for social justice. After serving as Justice Coordinator, including Socially Responsible Investing for her Mercy Community for several years, Sister Kathryn lived what she believed as Co-Founder and Associate Director CREA (Center for Reflection, Education and Action) until her sudden death. Sister Kathryn was predeceased by her siblings and is survived by many nieces, nephews, close cousins, grand and great nieces and nephews, the larger CREA community especially Dave Bolan, her grateful community of the Sisters of Mercy as well as her close friend, Sister Ruth Rosenbaum, TC with whom Sister Kathryn lived and worked at CREA for many years. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, August 20, St. Mary Home chapel 2021 Albany Ave. West Hartford, CT. A reception featuring an ice cream social to honor Kathryn’s request will follow the Liturgy.
