Obituary for Sister Anita Sheehy

Sister Anita Sheehy died peacefully at St. Mary Home in West Hartford on March 20, 2021. She was the daughter of William and Nora Sullivan Sheehy. Formerly known as Sister Virginia Mary, she entered the Sisters of Mercy on June 27, 1943 and professed her perpetual vows on January 2, of 1949. At the time of her death, she was 96 years old.

Sister held a B.S. in Education and an M.A. in Special Education from the University of St. Joseph in West Hartford, CT. Her 46 years of teaching in various CT. schools were mainly with children, Kindergarten through the Fourth Grade.

She lived for many years in Norwalk, Connecticut with her sister Catherine, her good friend Sister Sally Norcross CND and for the past few years with her dog Brodie, whom she loved unconditionally. When she retired, she actively engaged in works of mercy. She did library work at the Westport, CT. Public Library, served in parish ministry, assisted at summer camp with children ages 5-9, tutored students aged 5-8 in reading and language arts, engaged in childcare in private homes, and did peer counseling at a local nursing home.

As her health declined, Sister was admitted to Lourdes Health Care Center in Wilton before coming to Saint Mary Home in 2019. At both nursing residences Sister Anita made herself loved by all who came to see her. Her gentle, patient demeanor, her gracious courtesy, and her gratitude for all the blessings she had received in life were very much in evidence. When her cherished sister Catherine died, who was also a Sister of Mercy, she grieved but never lost her thankfulness for the life she was living.

Sister Anita leaves behind her Mercy Community and her good friend, Sister Sally Norcross CND. She also leaves behind her nieces: Marita Farrell, Elizabeth Sheehy, Katherine Sheehy, and her nephews: Peter McCuen, William Sheehy, John Sheehy, Stephen Sheehy Jr., and Mark Sheehy. She leaves behind her sister-in-law, Patricia Sheehy. She is predeceased by her sisters: Jeanne Farrell, Evelyn Duble and Marita Sheehy as well as her brothers, Stephen, and William. She is also predeceased by two nieces: Mary Christine and Anne Sheehy and her sister-in-law, Margaret Sheehy.

The Sisters of Mercy extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at St. Mary Home for their loving and compassionate care. As requested by Sister Anita, burial services will be private. A Memorial Mass will follow at a later date. Arrangements are with Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home. Online condolences may be made at www.SheehanHilbornBreen.com
