Obituary for Sarah “Sally” Killen May

Sarah “Sally” Killen May, of West Harford, CT, age 76, passed peacefully in her sleep on August 20, 2022.

Sally was born on August 12, 1946, in Chicago, IL to Eunice Price Killen Lyman and William Lester Killen. She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband Robert W. May. Sally leaves a sister, Barbara Killen Galbreath DMD, of West Hartford, CT; a brother William “Bill” Lester Killen, Jr., of Atlanta, GA; and niece Cooper Emily Killen, of Richmond, VA.

The Killen family moved several times as they were growing up and settled in West Hartford, CT in 1967. Sally graduated from Franklin College in Franklin, IN in 1968 with a Bachelors of Art Degree in Biology. She became a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority and was part of a long-standing legacy at Franklin College. She then proceeded to become a Medical Technologist at St. Francis Hospital in Harford, CT and earned her Masters Degree in Science at Long Island University in 1972.

Sally met Bob May while he was a patient at St. Francis Hospital in 1969 and they married in 1972.

Sally loved working in the medical labs at St. Francis and became supervisor of the Immunology Lab. She was also employed at her sister’s dental office in Cityplace Hartford, CT on a part time basis and was a tremendous help during the recent Covid pandemic.

Sally made a priority of staying in touch with her colleagues and friends from the hospital after her retirement and was known for her quick wit and charming and spontaneous personality.  

She also became active at Grace Episcopal Church in Hartford, as she was a regular member of the 8 AM Sunday Mass congregation and a member of the Altar and Flower Guild.

A Requiem Mass celebrating Sally’s life will be Saturday, October 22 at 11 AM in Grace Episcopal Church, 55 Park Avenue, Hartford, with a reception following. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford.

The family wishes to thank all of Sally’s friends, the Congregation of Grace Episcopal Church and Rector Rowena Kemp, for their outpouring of support. It has been so greatly appreciated.
