Obituary for Robert E. "Bob" Hyland

Robert E. "Bob" Hyland, of West Hartford, passed away on January 1, 2020, surrounded by his loving family at the UConn Health Center, after a brief illness.
Bob was born in West Hartford on September 15, 1944, during the Great Atlantic Hurricane. He attended Our Lady of Sorrows School in Hartford and graduated Hall High School in West Hartford (Class of 1962). He served in the 3rd Infantry Division of the U.S. Army in Germany from 1968-1970. Bob earned a Bachelor of Science in business from the University of Connecticut and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Connecticut School of Law.
He made his career, first at Aetna and then at Travelers, Inc., as an attorney, until his recent retirement after 55 years of service.
Bob leaves behind his loving wife of 35 years, Harriet (Rosenstein) Hyland of West Hartford, and four children and three grandchildren: Rachel Hyland and her husband Steve Ersinghaus (and Steve’s son, Sam) of West Hartford; Sarah Hyland and her husband Richard Rochlin (Rex, Ruby, and Riley) of Farmington; Lindsay Hyland of Newington; and Daniel Hyland of New York. Bob also leaves his brother, Richard, and his wife Barbara of Kenner, LA, and dear friend and mother of Rachel and Sarah, Carol Hyland of Rocky Hill. He was pre-deceased by his parents William and Elizabeth, and a son-in-law, Pete Letizia.
He served as Judge Advocate for American Legion Post 96. He was an avid reader of military history, enjoyed old movies on Turner Classic Movies and was a lifelong fan of the Red Sox.
Bob was a kind, thoughtful, generous and funny man who dearly loved his grandchildren. He loved all animals will be missed by his dog, Charlie (the little monkey), and especially by his faithful cat, Iz.
