Obituary for Robert P. Belliveau

Robert “Bob” P. Belliveau, a devoted husband, father, father-in-law, and psychotherapist known for his kindness and humor, passed away on March 14, 2024, in Hartford, CT, at the age of 90. Born in Cambridge, MA on May 31, 1933, he was the beloved son of Amadeé and Rose Belliveau.

Bob's life was a testament to compassion, understanding, and advocacy. In 1966, he married Martha P. McIntosh, embarking on a journey of shared love and purpose that lasted nearly six decades. As a three-time cancer survivor he was keenly aware of making every day count.

Bob had a profound appreciation for the arts, particularly jazz music, film, and stand-up comedy. He found solace and inspiration in the classic crooners of the fifties and sixties jazz and those that followed their example as well as the magic of movies and their ability to tell truly human stories.  Bob and Martha both loved to travel. They embraced opportunities to combine their ideals as social workers and travelers to explore how those values were actualized around the world.

As a social worker and psychotherapist, Bob touched countless lives with his empathetic ear and insightful guidance. He possessed an innate ability to connect with others, offering solace and support to those in need. His professional endeavors were infused with a deep-rooted belief in the importance of social justice and equity, principles he championed throughout his life. He dedicated much of his time championing for the communities of Hartford, CT and was a fierce ally of LGBTQIA rights.

In addition to his professional and cultural interests, Bob cherished his role as a father and grandfather. He leaves behind a legacy of love and guidance to his two sons, Paul and Douglas, their spouses Jenny and Donna, and his three adoring grandchildren Addy, Ella and Aiden. In addition, his sense of community created a vibrant “chosen family” of cherished friends that he was equally proud of. His wisdom and warmth will continue to resonate through the generations he leaves behind.

Bob will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Friends and family are welcome to gather at the Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Ave., West Hartford, on Thursday, (March 21) from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., to honor his memory and the profound impact he made on the world. A graveside service will be Friday, (March 22), 10:00 a.m. at Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. May he rest in peace and may his legacy of kindness and advocacy endure for generations to come.
