Obituary for Richard Thomas Langan

Richard Thomas  Langan
Richard Thomas Langan, 92, of West Hartford, passed away peacefully in his home on April 19, 2017. Richard was a faithful and devoted husband, a proud father and grandfather, a good friend, a brave veteran of the Second World War, and a successful businessman and member of the West Hartford community.
Richard was born October 31, 1924 in Peabody, Massachusetts to Thomas Patrick Langan and Winifred Stevens Langan. He graduated from Peabody High School in 1943 and immediately volunteered to join the Army.
Richard served in the Pacific theater with the highly decorated 193rd Tank Company and fought in the invasion of Okinawa in 1945. During the invasion, Richard's tank was disabled by enemy artillery and he and his crew mates were fortunate to be rescued under heavy fire.
After being honorably discharged in 1946, Richard returned to Peabody and worked in the leather and textile industries. In 1950 he moved to Hartford, Connecticut, where he earned his Bachelor's degree in Business from Hillyer College. In 1961 he joined Mechanics Savings Bank, from which he retired in 1988 as Senior Vice President. Throughout his life, he cherished time spent golfing with his friends, particularly his brother John.
On May 4, 1961, Richard married Dorothy Galligan of Hartford and remained happily wed until her passing on September 4, 2015. He is survived by two daughters, Margaret Ann (Evan Ladouceur) Langan of New York City and Katherine Langan (Wallace) White of Glastonbury. Richard was a loving grandfather to Sarah Ann Ladouceur and Emma Katherine Ladouceur of New York, and William Wallace White III, Emily Ann White, and Thomas Patrick White of Glastonbury. He is predeceased by his three siblings: Irene Martello, John Langan and Mary Willard.
Richard will be missed by his family and friends, and fondly remembered for his strong opinions, affection for the Boston Red Sox, and devotion to his family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, April 24, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Brigid Church at 1088 New Britain Avenue., West Hartford. Friends may visit with the family on Monday, April 24, 2017 from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at Sheehan-Hilborn-Breen Funeral Home at 1084 New Britain Avenue., West Hartford. Burial will be in Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. Online condolences may be made at www.sheehanhilbornbreen.com/.
