Philip J. Roy, 86, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2021. Philip was born on September 21, 1934 in Sharon, CT to the late Sylva and Adrienne (Toussaint) Roy. A brave young man, he grew up in New Britain and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17 serving honorably as a parachute rigger in the Korean War from 1952-1955. Precision was a must for his war role and he carried that perfectionist quality back with him to CT where he made his life career as a machinist working first at Fafnir Bearing and then Sterling Screw Machine until his retirement. Phil met the love of his life, Anne, his late wife of almost 55 years at the Irish-American Club in East Boston, and the two married on St. Patrick’s Day. They made their home and raised their family in the Elmwood section of West Hartford and were communicants of St. Brigid Church. An honest and hardworking man, Phil taught his children the importance of a good work ethic and to be kind. Phil was not a social butterfly, but was a man of his word, loyal, and passionate in following through on a project. He paid no interest to expensive or elaborate possessions, but rather found joy in the simple things in life like an NBA basketball game (particularly if the Celtics were playing), a Boston cream donut, or a big bowl of ice cream. Phil belonged to a bowling league for several years when his kids were young and each Friday night he would alternate taking one of them with him to watch. He was a humorous soul with a mischievous smile and enjoyed a good joke, a good cigar, and a good card game. Phil was an active member of St. Jean de Baptiste Society where you could find him on Friday playing poker, cribbage, or knock rummy with the boys. He also loved country music– Eddie Arnold, Hank Snow, Ray Price, Johnny Cash and Glen Campbell just to name a few of his favorites. One of the memories his children will always cherish is watching Phil and Anne dancing in the kitchen on Sunday mornings. Philip leaves behind three daughters, Michelle Eldridge and husband James of Newington, Denise Roy of Southington, Suzanne Guglietta and husband Michael of Ellington and a son, Paul Roy and wife Christine of Newington, along with five grandchildren, Steven Eldridge and wife Lauren (who are expecting a baby that would have been Phil’s first great-grandchild), Meghan Eldridge, Paul Guglietta, Daniel Roy and Julia Roy, and a special close friend of the family, Lori Foligno, who was like a fourth daughter to him. In addition, Philip is survived by two sisters, Rolande Albert of New Britain and Nancy Dignazio of West Hartford, a brother-in-law, Albert Tarpinian of Wollaston, MA, and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The family would like to extend their thanks to the 1B staff and Dr. Kenny at Live Well in Southington for the care provided to Phil over the past 2 ½ years. We find peace and solace in knowing that our Dad is once again reunited with our Mom. Due to the current pandemic, there will be no calling hours. Family members and friends are asked to go directly to the church for a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, January 14, 2021 at 10:00 am at St. Brigid Church in West Hartford. Burial will follow with full military honors at Rose Hill Memorial Park, Rocky Hill. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N.
