Obituary for Mary Patricia McCarthy (Jones)

Mary Patricia (Jones) McCarthy, 78, of Farmington, beloved wife of the late Denis McCarthy, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 19, 2015 at Hartford Hospital, surrounded by her family. Born on September 8, 1936, she grew up on Horse Island off the coast in the west of County Cork, Ireland, she was the daughter of the late William and Annie (McCarthy) Jones. In the early 1950”s, Mary left the island to work on the mainland in Cork, where she would eventually meet her future husband, Denis. In October 1958, Denis and Mary emigrated to the United States. Mary initially resided in Saratoga Springs, NY, where her sister Kitty, who had emigrated earlier lived. Mary then briefly moved to Chicago to be with Denis, however, they returned shortly and married on January 30, 1960 in Saratoga Springs. Following the wedding, they settled in the Hartford area, living in West Hartford and then Farmington for the past 45 years. Prior to retirement, Mary raised her family and also worked as a customer service representative at Society for Savings/Bank of Boston for many years. Mary as a proud life member of the Irish American Home Society and was a communicant of St. Helena’s Church in West Hartford. During the 70’s through the 90’s, Mary was an avid Dart player, winning numerous tournaments, and at one point was considered the best female dart player in Connecticut. In addition, Mary had a passion for golf, especially loving to play with her regular ladies foursome, as well as with her grandsons. Denis and Mary also frequently traveled for years that included many trips back home to Ireland and taking cruises to a number of places. Mary is survived by her children, Ann McCarthy of Morristown, New Jersey, Patrick and his wife Erin of Simsbury, Eileen McCarthy of New Britain, grandsons William, Sean, and Denis McCarthy of Simsbury, her sister Kitty Macica of Saratoga Springs, NY, brother Patrick “Joe” Jones of Co. Cork Ireland, many nieces and nephews in the U.S. and Ireland, and a special cousin, Rita and her husband Tom Downes of Manchester. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her brother Sean Jones in Ireland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, June 25 at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of St. Helena, Echo
Lane, West Hartford. Everyone is requested to meet at Church. Calling hours are Wednesday, June 24 from 5-8 p.m. at the Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Ave., West Hartford.
