Obituary for Mary Malcolm-Smith

Mary Malcolm-Smith (Powers, Martin) of West Hartford, CT, passed away peacefully in her sleep on November 22, 2023 at almost 92 years old. Mary was born in Hartford, CT, the daughter of Helen (Connell) and George “Duke” Malcolm-Smith. She grew up in West Hartford where she attended Morley Elementary School, Sedgwick Junior High School and Hall High School, class of 1950. In 1952 she graduated from the Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School in Manhattan, NY. She worked at WTIC and the US Postal Service (retired in 1995) in Hartford. She spent summers as a child at the beach on Plum Island, MA with her brothers and cousins.

Mary is survived by her five wonderful children, of whom she was so proud: Christie and Todd Christensen of Lyme, CT, Lynn and Joe Rossi of West Hartford, CT, John and Katie Powers of West Hartford, CT, Lisa and Ted Wojcik of CT, and Mark Powers and Jen Helenek of Sarasota, FL. She also leaves her grandchildren, Alex (Breanna) Christensen, Brittany (Adam) Lyon, Kyle (Kate) Christensen, Ben Rossi, Ali Rossi, John (Andrea) Rossi, Jaerid (Kirstin) Rossi, Maggie Powers, Sean Powers, Thaddeus Wojcik and eight great-grandchildren. Additionally, she leaves her lifelong friend Margie Stewart. Mary was predeceased by her brothers John and Kirby Malcolm-Smith and a host of many friends.

Mary loved traveling (especially with her family), the beach and family get-togethers where she enjoyed playing card games, with Acey Ducey and 31 being her favorites. She also enjoyed playing bingo and Wii bowling with her friends at The Court of St. James in West Hartford. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and the Elmwood Senior Center. Her passions were Scrabble, crossword puzzles and jazz music. When raising her children, her home and swimming pool were always open and welcoming to their friends, who fondly called her “Mom”.

Mary was always a strong woman. Through her we know what resilience and perseverance truly look like. She always provided support and love for her family and will be dearly missed.

Mary’s family is grateful for the outstanding care and compassion she received by the entire staff at the Jefferson House in Newington over the past two years.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Please honor Mary by living life to the fullest, having a Manhattan with cherries, a bowl of mint chocolate chip ice cream or a lobster roll, by doing a crossword puzzle on a beach or whatever you enjoy most. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation and the Kidney Transplant Foundation. Online condolences may be made at www.SheehanHilbornBreen.com
