Obituary for Mary (Downer) Barrett

Mary Hevrin (Downer) Barrett, 91, of West Hartford, CT passed away on May 7, 2023 in Farmington, CT. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 years, Richard "Dick" Barrett. Mary is survived by children John (Kathleen) of Hudson, Ohio; Susan and Andrew of West Hartford, CT; grandchildren Sarah Costigan (William) of Sun Valley, ID; Meagan Hughes (Steve) of North Redondo Beach, CA; Charlotte Vernia of Berea, OH and Rocco Vernia of Cleveland, OH; great-grandchildren Charlotte and Emma Costigan, Payden and Hailey Hughes and numerous nieces and nephews that she loved dearly. Besides her husband, Mary was preceded in death by parents Winifred and Roy Downer and brothers Robert and Roy.

Mary was born and raised in Willimantic, CT. She graduated from Windham High School and attended Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, MA. Mary graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1954 and worked as a kindergarten teacher in Hebron, CT. After marriage, Mary and Dick moved to St. Clair Shores, MI; Manchester, CT and Stratford, CT before settling in her current home in West Hartford in 1968.

Mary loved traveling with Dick. Their adventures included almost every antique store in New England, a cruise on the QE2 and trips to Ohio to visit their grandchildren. Family was always the center of her life. Mary was a loving, devoted, and cherished wife, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend. She could always be counted on for a hot cup of tea, a decadent piece of chocolate cake, or a slice of homemade apple pie. We will always remember her kindness, her bright blue eyes and beautiful smile.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 12, 2023 at the Cathedral of St. Joseph, 140 Farmington Ave., Hartford. There will be no calling hours. Burial services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cathedral of Saint Joseph Food Pantry or Bushnell Park Conservancy.
