Obituary for Martha A. Duncan

Martha A. Duncan
Martha Atwater Duncan, 97, longtime resident of West Hartford and Avery Heights in Hartford, passed away on January 4, 2021. She was born to Dr. Reginald M. Atwater and Charlotte P. Atwater at the Yale Mission Hospital in Changsha, China. She grew up in Olean and Bronxville, New York, and graduated from Oberlin College. She was married to John B. Duncan for 52 years.

Martha was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister Constance A. Bowser and brother David S. Atwater.

She is survived by her six children and loved in-laws: Margaret D. Shearer and James; Elizabeth D. Lyons and Richard; Ann D. McMillan; Charlotte D. Ashworth and David; Dr. Robert A. Duncan and Dr. Julia Reade; and Thomas B. Duncan and Rebecca Lindell. She is also survived by her sister Caroline A. Leonard and brother Dr. John B. Atwater and Leah. Her legacy of a large and loving family will be carried on by her 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Martha was a longtime active member of Immanuel Congregational Church in Hartford. She worked at Imprint in West Hartford. After retirement she and John lived at Avery Heights and were grateful for the care they received there. Throughout her life she enjoyed happy times spent with extended family at their summer cottage in Silver Bay, NY.

Plans for a memorial service are pending. Memorial donations may be sent to Immanuel Congregational Church (iccucc.org/give), the Lake George Land Conservancy (lglc.org/make-a-donation), or the Avery Heights Memorial Fund.
