Obituary for Mario Humberto Reyes

Mario Humberto Reyes, 80, of West Hartford passed away in the loving company of his family at Hartford Hospital on September 26, 2019. Mario was born on July 22, 1939 in Bolognesi, a small town in the Peruvian Andes. He is the son of the late Francisco Reyes and Paula Perez. Mario is survived by his wife of 46 years, Modesta Luz (Murillo) Reyes, his children Margot, Hillmer and Rina, as well as his grandchildren, great grandchildren, brothers, sisters and close family friends.
Mario grew up in Bolognesi and made a life there as a successful small cattle farmer and broker. He was able to raise a family with his wife, a teacher, until they left Peru in June 1988 and joined much of his wife’s family in Hartford.
He had a difficult time adjusting to their new life in the beginning, but he thought about his children’s future first, and that motivated him to work hard and learn English. He was an exemplary father and his children are all professionals now.
Mario loved horseback riding, music, his hometown Bolognesi, traveling, cooking for family and friends, tending to his garden, and reading the Holy Scripture. He was very actively involved in helping to rebuild the church in Bolognesi.
Calling hours will be held at Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Ave, West Hartford on Monday, September 30th from 5:00-8:00 pm. A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, October 1st at 10:00 am at Our Lady Of Sorrows Church, 79 New Park Ave, Hartford, where Mario was a devout parishioner. Mario will be laid to rest in his home town of Bolognesi, Peru. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to a charity that supports the poor, such as World Vision or Operation Smile.
