Obituary for Maria Teresa Sousa

Maria Teresa Sousa, 91, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, November 3, 2020. Born on November 20, 1928 in Santa Maria, Azores, Portugal, she immigrated to the United States in 1970 along with her husband and five of six children, her oldest daughter arrived later. They made Hartford, CT their new home filled with love and generations of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She worked at Connecticut Mutual for many years, where she along with her oldest daughter were part of a close knit community of Portuguese women that also became great friends. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church and member and co-founder of The Holy Ghost Portuguese Society where she volunteered her time helping with cooking and organizing at Portuguese Festivals with the same group of Portuguese women. After retiring around 1989, she opened her home to help her children and other moms with watching their children and raising her grandchildren.

Maria was predeceased by her husband Jacinto and her oldest daughter Liliana and son-in-law Adelino Mare. She is survived by a daughter Maria and husband Jose Almada of Vernon, a daughter Noemia and husband Joao Rego of Hartford, a son Tony Sousa of Hartford, a son Victor Sousa and wife Nina of Manchester, a daughter Teresa and husband Kenneth Rybczyk of Southbridge, MA. She is also survived by her 16 wonderful grandchildren and 19 amazing great-grandchildren which all were the loves of her life and greatest legacy.

Maria also leaves behind a brother Antonio Falcao of Hartford, and sisters Fatima Sousa of Hartford, Maria DeSousa and Adelina Loura both of Providence, RI and many nieces and nephews.

We regret to inform you that due to COVID-19 restrictions there will be limits how many people may attend. There will be a family viewing at the Sheehan-Hilborn- Breen Funeral Home, West Hartford at 9:00 am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial Monday, 11 am at Our Lady of Fatima Church. Burial will follow at Mount Saint Benedict Cemetery in Bloomfield.

In lieu of flowers you may send a donation to any food share distribution center in Hartford in her name.
