Obituary for Margo Raymond
Margo Raymond, 85, died peacefully on December 26, 2019, in hospice care. Born Margaret Foundas in Newburgh, New York on January 10, 1934, Margo spent her childhood in Bristol, CT and moved as a young adult to West Hartford, CT, where she remained for the rest of her life. One of Margo’s favorite jobs was working in downtown Hartford for Huntington Books, but she went on to develop a niche in bookkeeping, working for several local electronics/office equipment companies such as Hatry and George David. Before retiring she had transitioned to working at Avery Heights Nursing Facility, both as a companion for the elderly and an administrative assistant.
Margo will be remembered for her gentle resilience, warm humor, and steadfast consistency. She was very close to her mother, Helen P. Miller, also of West Hartford, who predeceased her in 2007. Margo was a widow who leaves behind not only a daughter, Kelly A. Schmidt of Ellington, but also several step-children, including Robert Raymond of East Hartford. Kelly’s baby son Thomas F. Brophy, IV brought great happiness to Margo at the end of her life. Others in her remaining extended family include a sister, Madge Chakalis of Floral Park, NY, niece Lisa Chakalis of Newburyport, MA, and nephew George Chakalis and his wife Abby of Floral Park, NY. Margo also leaves behind at least 12 first cousins, many second cousins, as well as great nieces and nephews. She also will be missed by her close friend of over 40 years Josephine Monikowski of West Hartford, whom she met at one of her jobs.
Margo courageously battled against multiple illnesses, and she was uplifted by the help of a group of loving and resourceful caregivers. Sara Kral, Ann Mione, Sheron Smith, Gale B. Gardiner, and Delva Robb became like Margo’s extended family and helped her find joy in simple things until the very end. Daughter Kelly is most grateful to each of them as well as to the VITAS hospice team, which was wonderfully compassionate, adaptable and available.
A Memorial Service will be at 1:00 pm on Monday, February 17, 2020, Margo’s mother’s birthday, at the Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Ave., West Hartford.
