Obituary for Margaret (Peggy) E. Dimmitt

Margaret (Peggy) E. Dimmitt, 97, of West Hartford, Connecticut passed away on Tuesday, May 25, 2021.

Peggy was born on March 6, 1924 in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, the daughter of the late Leslie and Eleanor (Cline) Bewick. She grew up in St. John and spent her summers in the country in Westfield. After graduating from St. John High School, she attended Mt. Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick and received her nursing degree at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children. She moved to the United States and met her husband, Robert K. Dimmitt and was married 59 years until his passing in 2012. They had three children and resided in many parts of the country, although work always seemed to bring them back to West Hartford. Peggy’s focus shifted from nursing to raising her children and she was an active volunteer in the places they resided. While her children were growing up, they spent their summers in New Brunswick where Peggy loved the ocean and the enormous family gatherings in the same locations she had spent her childhood. Peggy was an avid reader, collector of Early American antiques and loved classical music.

Over the past decade, Peggy lived independently at The McAuley in West Hartford, where she was active on the Welcoming Committee and enjoyed dinners with friends, family visits and getting the latest news on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be fondly remembered for her love of fashion and perfectly coiffed white hair. She was grateful for every day and kind to all.

In addition to her husband, Robert, who predeceased her, Peggy, leaves a daughter, E. Anne (Dimmitt) Hayes and her husband, Randall, of West Hartford and two sons, Robert Bewick Dimmitt and his wife Elizabeth of Parrish, FL, and William Frederick Dimmitt of San Antonio, Texas. In addition, she leaves six grandchildren, Deirdre Dimmitt Wittkamper and her husband Myles of Parrish, Matthew Dimmitt of Parrish, FL, Christopher Hayes of Hartford and Brooke Hayes of West Hartford, Hannah Dimmitt of New Orleans, LA and Sarah Dimmitt of Hoboken, NJ. as well as two great-grandchildren, Kayleigh and Hudson Wittkamper of Parrish, FL. Peggy also leaves a sister, Ann Fullerton Butler of Jacksonville, FL and a sister-in-law, Bunny Bewick, of Longmeadow, MA. She was predeceased by two brothers, Dr. John Bewick and Douglas Bewick. She also leaves nine nieces and nephews.

Peggy was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in West Hartford. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church, 679 Farmington Ave., West Hartford, CT 06117, Mount Allison University, 62 York St., Sackville, NB, E4L 1E4 Canada, or a charity of one's choice.
