Obituary for Malcolm A. Arnold

Malcolm Anthony Arnold passed away peacefully at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in NYC on March 9, 2023 with his loving wife, Monica, by his side. Malcolm, born June 28, 1947, was the son of Warren and Mildred (Amaral) Arnold. He grew up on Bonner Street in Hartford with his extended family and “Ti Tias”. Malcolm graduated from Hartford High School, Class of 1965, maintaining connections with his childhood friends throughout his life. He lived in West Hartford most of his life, but spent as much time as possible on the Connecticut shore because of his love for the sea.

Malcolm was a Master Plumber who ran his own construction company, Arnold Plumbing and Piping, for over 50 years until his death. He was a friend of Bill Wilson for over 35 years, lived by the motto “One Day at a Time” and was a role model for many others.

Malcolm was proud of his Portuguese heritage and hoped to someday visit the Azores where his mother was born. Malcolm was notable for his fashion flair, that included flashy shoes, socks, and suits with a 1950’s style hat or wool cap. He had a gift for connecting with people and making them laugh often telling outlandish stories taken from his life experiences. He delighted young and old alike with his collection of holiday costumes that included Santa Claus, Cupid, the Easter Bunny, a Leprechaun and even Anne of Green Gables.

Malcolm leaves behind his devoted wife of 34 years, Monica Cipes Arnold, DMD. He is survived by his six children: Nina Arnold, husband Chris Nelson; Lila Arnold; Lisa Arnold; Ben Cipes, wife Cheryl; Elizabeth Cipes Chisholm, husband Mike; and Laura Arnold Nahins, husband Evan. He was the proud grandfather of nine grandchildren: Jake Douglas, Angelina DelPadre, Finn Nelson, Jackson and James Cipes, Katherine and William Chisholm, and Emilia and Gabriel Nahins. Malcolm was close to his sister, Deborah Taylor, and her husband Bill, as well as his brother-in-law Chris Hummell and wife Faye. He always enjoyed spending time with his many cousins, nieces, nephews, and godchildren. His canine companion, Ariel, was always by his side.

Special thanks to Malcolm’s physicians- Drs. Politikos, Budhu, and Pristyashnyuk and his health care teams at Memorial Sloan Kettering and Hartford Hospitals.
