Obituary for Luis A. Rivera

Luis A. Rivera, 86, of Hartford, loving husband to Rosa (Cotto) Rivera, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Saturday, October 8, 2022. Born on November 11, 1935 in Salinas, Puerto Rico, son of the late Tomas and Agripina (De Jesus) Rivera, he lived in Puerto Rico and Florida before moving to Hartford over 60 years ago. He met the love of his life Rosa at a church trip to Brooklyn, New York 44 years ago and they were inseparable ever since.  

He will be remembered as a man who had a passion for his family and serving God.  He was a loving and compassionate husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, and great grandfather.  Luis was a kind, gentle and simple man who loved music, singing and telling jokes. His family will fondly remember his wonderful sense of humor, his love for reading and telling old stories from his childhood.  

Luis is survived by his children Antonio Rivera, Nancy Rivera, Ferdinand Rivera and their mother Irma; son, Luis Rivera Jr., daughters Neida and Zulma Rivera (mother Hilda) and Emily Rivera. Luis is also survived by two nephews and one niece that he shared a special bond with Ramon Alvarado, Antonio Alvarado and Monserrate Alvarado; 17 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. A special grandchild and great-grandchild that lived at home with him Natalie Velez and Kyson Brown. Special caregivers Emelinda Arias, Jose Quiñonez and Maria I. Cotto.

Besides his parents, Luis was predeceased by a sister Christina Alvarado, a nephew Victor Alvarado, niece Eulogia Alvarado and his former wife Hilda Sanchez.

Luis’ family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 12, from 5pm to 7pm, at Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Avenue, West Hartford. A service will be held at 6:30pm.
