Obituary for Loius Torma

Louis (Lajos) Torma, 85, of West Hartford passed away early Christmas morning, December 25, 2021. He was the son of Imre Torma and Juliana Kiss Farkas Torma and was born in the city of Kisber, Hungary on July 6, 1936. He attended school in Gyor, Hungary preparing for a career in mechanical engineering. Soon after the Russian invasion of Hungary in 1956, he fled with friends to the West, walking much of the way to Trieste, Austria. He stayed for a time in one of the seven displaced persons camps near Trieste and from there he came to Camp Kilmer in New Jersey. He soon settled into a new life in Plainfield, NJ.

Louis and Norma C. Williams were married on March 23, 1985 in Piscataway, NJ, where they made their first home together. Louis retired after working for many years with PSEG in Plainfield, NJ. In 2000, they removed to West Hartford. Louis was a kind and caring husband to Norma, and he was always ready to help relatives with repairs and construction work. He brought Norma to Hungary to meet his family in 1984. Years later, he brought his stepdaughters on a trip to Europe, stopping in Hungary to meet his niece and family.

In 2019 Norma moved to St. Mary’s Home in West Hartford and Louis joined her there in November, 2021. Louis’s cancer caused him great distress, but his room at St. Mary’s was next door to Norma’s and they visited each other as much as possible. Louis is survived by his wife Norma; stepdaughters Susan C. McCard (David), Sandra L. Safdi (Ramzi) and Sheila A. Fitzgerald (Russell); stepgrandchildren Amanda Miller (Matthew), David J. Gonsalves, Scott E. McCarthy and two nieces in Hungary. He also leaves his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Robert and Araci Williams and their families.

Louis was predeceased by his parents, brothers Imre and Janos, sister Anna  and his first wife, Pearl Williams Snidenbach.

A Graveside Service for the family will be held when weather permits. Online condolences may be made at www.SheehanHilbornBreen.com
