Obituary for Joyce Mecartney (Marshall)

Joyce Marshall Mecartney died peacefully at her home in West Hartford on Sunday, May 2, 2021.
Joyce was the daughter of Elizabeth Wickes Marshall and Irving Marshall of Auburn, NY., where she graduated from East High School. She went on to undergraduate studies at Pembroke College and attended art school in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. During her college years, summers were filled with almost perpetual swimming working as an American Red Cross water safety instructor in the Finger Lakes. After college, Joyce worked at the Egyptian Embassy in Washington D.C. before her marriage to the late Malcom Mecartney Jr. in 1957. Malcom and Joyce lived in Winnetka, IL for many years with their three children until 1979 when they moved to West Hartford.

Joyce received her bachelor’s degree in Italian at Trinity College and master’s degree in French at Central Connecticut State University. She continued her love of languages later in life by studying Russian. Joyce also loved to play and study the piano. Her love of music was also manifest by her many years of supporting the Monadnock Music series in Peterborough, NH.

Joyce loved music, outdoor sports, and most of all her family and the many friends she made wherever she went. Locally, Joyce was an active member of Alliance Francais, Minerva Book Club, and the Saturday Morning Club. She loved to swim at the Farmington Field Club, Mandell JCC, and play tennis at Elizabeth Park.

Joyce is survived by her sister Shirley Marshall of West Hartford,son David L. Mecartney of Scottsdale, AZ, daughter Bonnie L. Bassette and her husband Roy D. Bassette III of West Hartford, granddaughter Emily Mecartney of Chicago, IL, grandson Alex Mecartney of Chicago, IL., granddaughter Kelly Mecartney of Brookfield, CT, grandson Daniel Mecartney of Brookfield, CT, grandson Dune Mecartney of Jackson, WY, granddaughter Monica Bassette of West Hartford, grandson Reid Bassette and his wife Jacy E. Bassette of San Louis Obispo, CA, and grandson Christian Bassette of West Hartford. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Malcom Mecartney, son Harry Mecartney, and parents Elizabeth and Irving Marshall.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, May 5, 2021 from 4-7 p.m. at Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Avenue, West Hartford, CT. There will be a short memorial service at 6:15 p.m. The family will attend a private burial service in Peterborough, NH.
