José Magalhães Ferreira, 86, of Newington, beloved husband of Maria Augusta Silva, passed away surrounded by family on Saturday, April 8, 2023. He was born and raised in Relva-Monteiras, Castro Daire, Portugal, where he served as a GNR Police Officer until he immigrated to America in 1982. José resided in Newington for over 20 years and was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Hartford. 

José leaves his wife Maria Augusta of 63 years; his son and daughter-in-law, Antonio and Madalena Magalhães of Newington; his son and daughter-in-law, Fernando and Rosa Magalhães of Newington; his daughter and son-in-law, Lurdes and Joe DaCosta of Newington; his brother and sister-in-law, Joaquim Magalhães Ferreira and Maria do Céu Silva of Portugal; and six grandchildren, Sara, Stephanie, Brian, Hailey, Jessica and Wesley. He also leaves behind in-laws, José and Laurentina Silva and Inocêncio Silva, as well as several nieces and nephews.

José was predeceased by his sister, Maria do Carmo Silva, his brother Antonio Ferreira, his sister-in-law Maria Lourdes Ferreira, and his brother-in-law Agostinho Silva.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, April 12 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain, Avenue, West Hartford. The Funeral Procession will be Thursday, April 13 at 9:00 a.m. from the funeral home, followed by a 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Hartford. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in José’s name may be made to Our Lady of Fatima Church, 50 Kane Street, Hartford, CT 06106.
