Obituary for Joao A. Rego

Joao A. Rego, age 70, of Hartford, Ct. passed away suddenly in the early morning hours of Christmas Day at Hartford Hospital.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 45 years, Noemia (Sousa) Rego, two daughters Susan and husband Stephen Castro, Vanessa Rego and fiancé Jesus Ruiz and a son Jesse Rego and wife Guiomar Pelaez. He also leaves behind his three grandchildren Jevann and Aliana Ruiz, and Stephen Castro.

Joao was a very humble and proud man, his best achievement and greatest pride and joy were his family who he loved and adored very much. They loved him very much and he will be greatly missed by them. He loved making his family laugh and every year at Christmas loved dressing up as Santa Claus. This is something that will always be remembered and cherished by every generation in his family.

Joao was born in Santa Maria, Azores on July 12, 1950 to Jacinto Medeiros and Isabel Lima. At the age of 18, he enrolled in active service and served in the Army for Four years. Serving in both Sao Miguel and Lisbon, Portugal, in April of 1974, during The “Portuguese Carnation Revolt” or better known in Portuguese as 25 de Abril, (April 25th) a military coup that took over the government. Leaving the service in 1975, he married the love of his life, on May 17th.

He immigrated to Hartford, CT around September 1975. He worked at Foodways Service for 15 years then moving on to Metal Management Aerospace where he retired after 15 years of working there.

He was an avid supporter of Benfica soccer and loved watching his team play. He also loved listening to the Portuguese Mass every Sunday morning on tv with his wife.

He also leaves behind two sisters, Olga Melo, Maria and husband Agostinho Costa and sister in law Valdemira Medeiros and lots of nieces and nephews. On his wife’s side he leaves behind, two sisters-in-law Maria and husband Jose Almada of Vernon, Teresa and husband Kenneth Rybczyk, two brothers-in-law Tony Sousa, Victor Sousa and wife Nina Sousa and lots of nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his parents, Jacinto Medeiros Rego, and Isabelinha Lima, his in laws, Jacinto and Maria T. Sousa, a sister in law, Liliana and brother-in-law, Adelino Mare. A brother, Manuel and wife Margarida Rego, a sister, Lourdes, husband Antonio Branco both of Sao Miguel. A sister, Adriana Lima, her husband Joao Rita of Santa Maria, a brother, Antonio of East Providence, RI.

There will be a limited viewing at Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Ave., West Hartford, Thursday, December 31, at 9 am. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 50 Kane St., Hartford, Burial will follow to Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford.
