Obituary for James D. Foley

D. Foley, 77, of San Diego, CA, husband of the late Patricia (Murphy), died Saturday, January 18, 2014 in his home. Born in Keel, Castlemaine, Co. Kerry, Ireland, son of the late Daniel J. and Ellen (Flynn) Foley, he immigrated to Hartford in 1957 and had lived in San Diego for the past 36 years. Jim played Gaelic Football for his native parish of Keel and several teams across the USA, including Hartford, New York and California and he was an avid golfer and handball player. He and his wife Pat opened the Blarney Stone Pub in Clairemont, CA in 1978, the pub quickly became home to the county's growing Irish community. Jim was instrumental in starting the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Hartford and also, the San Diego St. Patrick's Day Parade now in its 34th year. Jim is survived in San Diego by his daughter, Siobhan Foley and her husband Jeff Lytle, three brothers, John Foley (Anne) of Manchester, Michael Foley (Patricia) of Niantic, and Timothy Foley (Julie) of Ireland; three sisters, Mary Traynor of Enfield, Nell Hosey (John) of West Hartford and Bridget Kelliher of Ireland and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Catherine and four brothers, Thomas, Patrick, Jeremiah and Daniel. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, (Feb. 8) at The Irish American Home, 132 Commerce St., Glastonbury.
