Obituary for James R. Evans

James “Jim” R. Evans, 62, of West Hartford, departed this life on Thursday, March 30, 2023, at Hartford Hospital.

Jim was born August 31, 1960 in Blossburg, Pennsylvania to the late James Robert Evans and Miriam (Luh) Evans. Jim always had a camera in hand. As a teenager, he earned the nickname “Flash” for his perfectly timed photos. Jim had an adventurous spirit, driving across the country solo on his motorcycle for the 1984 Olympics. He graduated from North Penn High School and later earned a BA in Public Relations from Mansfield University.

Most of Jim’s career was spent as a talented videographer/editor at WENY-Elmira, WBNG - Elmira Bureau Chief, WBNG-TV-Binghamton, WSTM-Syracuse and WFSB-Hartford.

He had a big heart and a big vision. He was a doer, eager to help quietly behind the scenes. Everything he did was next level, an extravaganza! He had a generous heart and if asked to contribute he'd ensure whatever was requested appeared in plentiful supply. He was known at times to be inexorable.

Jim served on the vestry at St. John’s Episcopal Church in West Hartford and was often found assisting with the upkeep and helping prepare for meetings, events and services. He was an active volunteer with the Boy Scouts. (Troop 12 / Pack 46) and loved to camp. He was an archery/rifle instructor at Camp Strang and taught pinewood derby car building clinics out of the church basement. He enjoyed lake life, sci-fi, games - especially chess, catan, risk and pinochle - football, NASCAR and trains.

Jim is survived by his wife Jennifer (Bachman) Evans; children, James Parker Evans and Genella Ritter Evans; sister, Linda Natale (Joseph) and several in-laws, nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be Friday, May 5, 2023 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, West Hartford at 3:30 p.m. The family will greet guests at an open reception immediately following the Service. Online condolences may be made at www.SheehanHilbornBreen.com
