Obituary for Jainamma P. Cherian, DNP

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Jainamma P. Cherian DNP, of West Hartford, CT. She died at the age of 61 on April 19, 2023, surrounded by her loved ones after a hard-fought battle with pancreatic cancer.

Jainamma P. Cherian was born on May 25, 1961 in Karavaloor, Kerala, India. From a very young age, Jainamma had known she wanted to be a nurse. Jainamma attended and graduated from the General Nursing School in Bikaner, Rajasthan in 1980. After immigrating to the US in 1990, Jainamma began practicing nursing in Connecticut.

Jainamma prided herself on her education and she loved learning. She continued pursuing her education after arriving in the US, earning her BSN and MSN at the University of Hartford as well as her APRN certification and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree from the University of St. Joseph all four of which she completed Summa Cum Laude. Jainamma was able to accomplish all of this while raising three sons and working full-time as a Nursing Supervisor for the State of Connecticut at Blue Hills Hospital. She retired in May of 2021 after 25 years with the State of Connecticut.

Jainamma is survived by her loving husband, Pappachan K. Cherian, who stood by her side throughout their journey together. Together they raised three sons, Jeffin Cherian M.D., Jerrin Cherian L.P.N., and Jessin Cherian, who were her pride and joy. Jainamma was also blessed with a wonderful daughter-in-law, Smruthi Cherian M.D., who is married to Jeffin, and a grandson, Jeevan Cherian, who brought immense joy to her life every day until the very end. Jainamma is also survived by many extended relatives both within the US and India.

Jainamma's family was at the center of her life, and she devoted herself to their happiness and well-being. She instilled in them the same values of hard work and perseverance that guided her throughout her life. Her family will always remember her as a loving and caring wife, mother, and grandmother, who always put others’ needs first.

In addition to her commitment to her family and profession, Jainamma also held a strong belief in God and was a devout Christian. Her faith was an important part of her life, providing her with strength and guidance in both good times and bad. She lived out that belief in her work as a nurse and in her interactions with others. Her faith was a source of comfort and hope to her, and it was evident in the way she lived her life with kindness, compassion, and selflessness.

Jainamma's legacy of strength, determination, and dedication will continue to inspire her family and all those who knew her. Her spirit will live on through her family, who will honor her memory and continue to strive for excellence in all aspects of their lives.

"Return to your rest, my soul, for the Lord has been good to you.

For you, Lord, have delivered me from death, my eyes from tears,

my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before the Lord

in the land of the living.

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his faithful servants."

-Psalm 116:7-9,15
