Herman Walter Freitag, 84, beloved husband of the late Natalie (Burnham) Freitag for 54 years, reached the embrace of Jesus on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2022. Herman passed away peacefully when his earthly body could no longer keep pace with his spirit. Herman, Dad, Grandpa Hermie, Officer Freitag, Mayor of Seabury, Herman the German, and the German Leprechaun left this earth to join his wife in eternal glory. What a glorious moment to meet his Savior on the eve of that Savior’s birth. He lived his life as large as his heart and you could often hear him cheering on the Irish in football and basketball and UCONN in women’s basketball. The legacy he leaves as a father, grand and great grandfather, foster father, mentor, Military Police Officer, West Hartford Police Officer, Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home staff member and one who would and did give the shirt off his back is immeasurable.

Herman was born April 27, 1938 in Hartford to Rose Sophie Ruoff and Walter Hugo Freitag, joining eight older siblings who have all predeceased him. His daughters Kirsti, Katie and Jodi and grandchildren Samuel (Laura), Elise (Andrew), and Julia (Lukas), children of Kirsten and Michael Murray of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL and Amanda and Emily, daughters of Katie and Brian Lagace of New Fairfield, CT and nine foster children completed his life. Cecilia, Eleonore, and Annelise, three little great-grandbaby girls, joyfully expanded the family over the last two years.

He was nourished spiritually at Wintonbury Church since the late 1970s and thrived at Seabury’s Independent Living for 12 fulfilling years. We thank The Views’ staff at Seabury for their continued care over this last year and the Skilled Nursing Team during the last week of his life.
