Obituary for Helen Marie (Glasheen) Leghorn

Helen Marie (Glasheen) Leghorn, 82, of West Hartford, CT, passed away on Saturday, March 4, 2023. She was born January 6, 1941, to the late Edward and Helen Glasheen in Waterbury, CT.

Helen, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, and sister is survived by her husband, Barry; sons Sean, Jeremy, Brendan, and Kevin; daughters-in-law Erin and Vanessa; granddaughters Emma and Cate; her cousin Alison Osborne and her sister and best friend Margaret “Peggy” Judd. She was predeceased by her younger brother Edward Glasheen.

Helen graduated from Trinity College in Washington, D.C. with a degree in mathematics in 1962. Upon graduation, she started working at Aetna in Hartford as a computer programmer. With the exception of a few breaks to welcome and raise each of her sons, she worked there until her retirement in 2009.

Helen married Barry, the love of her life, on July 6, 1968 (54 years). She faithfully supported her family by being a stay-at-home mom and working simultaneously. She was able to accomplish this family/work balance due to her unique skillsets and her employer not wanting to lose her. She leveraged this advantage to become an early pioneer in teleworking (even before this was a thing).

In retirement, Helen focused her time on enjoying and loving her family but also took pleasure in dominating her daily crossword and sudoku puzzles. Additionally, she and her husband enjoyed daily lunch dates where they made many friends. Their favorite spot was the Fernwood where they had their first date many years ago.

A devout Catholic, her dedication and faith to God have been an inspiration to her family right up to the end. She was an active member of St. Helena Church where she met some of her best friends singing in the choir. Later, she joined St. Peter Claver Church. It is a great comfort to us knowing that she is now reunited with her mother, father, and brother above, and that we, too, will one day be reunited with her.

Calling hours will be Friday, (March 10th) from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Avenue, West Hartford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, (March 11th) at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter Claver Church, 47 Pleasant Street, West Hartford. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford.
