Gladys Ward Dewey was received into the loving arms of her predeceased husband Dwight Nelson Dewey on January 23, 2022. She was a resident of West Hartford, CT, former resident of Old Saybrook, CT.
Gladys was born in Hartford, CT on June 12, 1927 to Helen Ward and Sydney Ward. She is survived by three sons David Dewey and his wife Jacqueline of Cape Neddick, Maine, Robert Dewey and his wife Francine of Enfield, and Steven Dewey of West Hartford. She is predeceased by her life partner Dwight N. Dewey of 63 years, and a sister Helen Ertel. She also leaves 7 grandchildren, Robert Dewey, Rachael Dewey, Beverly Dewey, Matthew Dewey, Patrick Dewey, Kadene Limmer and Melissa Hoebel, and 10 great grandchildren, a niece Janette Grace and two nephews Ken Farris and Charles Ertel. She had many special dogs during her lifetime.
Gladys graduated from William H Hall High School in 1945. She was employed at The Hartford Insurance Group as an Executive Secretary through 1954. Mother and homemaker were her primary vocations until the children started school. Many locals remember Gladys for her dynamic position as Director at Elmwood Community Church Nursery School for 11 years. In addition, she taught Sunday School for many years at First Church of Christ Congregational, West Hartford, CT of which she was a lifelong member.
Gladys became a member of Beta Sigma Phi from her early years of secretarial school. She served many positions within the sorority offering support to the community.
A private graveside service will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery, Rocky Hill at the family’s convenience. A Celebration of Life will take place later this spring.
